TT2A Athlete of the Month :: April 2012

April was an action packed month! We saw a small contingent of TT2A go forth and take on what turned out to be the monster that was ‘Ironman South Africa 2012’ experiencing what some would consider to be some of the toughest race conditions seen in an Ironman competition – a big call? big winds!!! We had a fantastic turnout from the team in Tri Yas producing some outstanding performances in the Sprint Distance race. Didge and Freddie travelled to Israel to race in the ETU European Triathlon Championships and Hunty ran the London Marathon. Finally, the majority of the team experienced the Deceitful Dehydrating Disgusting Dirty Dead Dog Duathlon at the end of the month – which I think everyone who participated will most certainly agree, was the hardest DDD to date 🙂 Legendary, can it get any better?

Remember! The award of AOTM, as titled, is for the outstanding performance or accomplishment of an individual relative to that individual’s ability 🙂

So, after what has been an action packed April, the Committee has decided and out of 5 nominations (and I have been reliably informed it was a tough decision) this months AOTM is [drum roll]

APRIL 2012

Simon ‘Chombi’ Kelly

Simon ‘Chombi’ Kelly – was one of those who took on the strong tides, strong winds and battled his way through the marathon to complete his first Ironman race – Ironman South Africa. This being one of Chombi’s first ever triathlon’s, let alone endurance events! He’s no featherweight so battling his way through in those weather conditions, with an enormous show of character in a tremendous time of 14:50:10 – he did us all proud 🙂

Piers Constable – Ironman South Africa (11:22)
No stranger to Ironman events, Piers ran incredibly well after a tough swim and bike. He was well prepared mentally and physically, a credit to his committment to training. Piers may have finished first out of TT2A on the day but he was there to see his team mates home after what Piers is the first to admit this was the hardest IM he’s experienced. He has done Norseman so I think we shall believe him!!!

Gary Rynhoud – Ironman South Africa (12:41)
Gary never gave up after a terrible ankle injury picked up last November – multi ligament damage, actually torn off the bone! [wince]. Gary trained and obviously couldn’t run as much as he would have hoped leading up to the event, so he tackled his first Ironman with a run/walk strategy – which paid off 🙂 Anytime you see Gazza out training and racing he’s always smiling 🙂 That positive attitude is a leading factor to Gary’s result in SA. Gazza is an inspiration to those out there with a hectic busy lifestyle with working and family commitment’s.

Finn Zwager – Ironman South Africa (12:15)
Aluminium Man – Finn is one of the most dedicated athletes on the team. His targets were blown out the door in the harsh conditions however, what made his performance so grand was how easy he finished the event. This cemented the fact that Capt. Finn has much more in him for his 2013 Ironman task. If there was an award for best race report Capt. Finn would win hands down 🙂

David Hunt – London Marathon (3:21)
What does this man have to do to get AOTM?? Another marathon Hunty… run quicker and maybe 🙂 Seriously, Hunty has demonstrated his running prowess yet again running a 3:21 – awesome!

So, May is upon us. What delights will this month behold I wonder…?

Didge & Feddie in ETU Championships

Didge claimed a silver medal in the Sprint AG F 30-34 for Ireland in the ETU European Triathlon Championships in Eilat, Israel at the weekend. More from the Triathlon Ireland official website

Plus a few post race thoughts on the race from Didge here

Freddie came 15th in Sprint AG M 19-24 for Belgium on debut. Great international racing experience for Freddie who at 19, has a great future in the sport 🙂

Well done to both Didge and Freddie. Great racing 🙂

TT2A Racing :: Ironman South Africa

We have a healthy TT2A contingent heading down to South Africa to compete in the Ironman event hosted by Port Elizabeth – The Windy City 🙂

Ironman South Africa is a popular race with TT2A, we saw a number of the team race last year (see race reports) a fairy demanding course and typically tough field of competition with the majority being, well – South African.

The 3.8km swim is 2 loops in fairly choppy waters. The 180km bike is 3 loops on pretty rough surface, hilly with some strong headwinds on the coastal road but picturesque. The run is 3 loops – and potentially hot to trott on that first loop before the sun sets!!! The race is well supported throughout the day, all along the course which makes for a fantastic event 🙂 The post race fodder is pretty awesome too – yum 🙂

We have Chombi, Finn and Gary on Ironman debut with Piers having done a few previously. If my research serves me correctly, Piers did IM SA in 2010 so he’s got first hand knowledge he’ll be able to share with the boys pre-race.

Good luck and go hard 🙂 TT2A be tracking the boys online and debating on times in the chatroom throughout the day. Can’t wait!!!

For more information on the race go to the official IM South Africa website

TT2A Racing :: Virgin London Marathon 2012

Hunty has jetted off to ye old Londontown to run the Virgin London Marathon on Sunday 22nd April 2012. He did a 3:15:14 in Dubai Marathon in January 2012. Just recently his training has been hampered by a cut on his foot, however I’m sure he’ll forget all that and

the atmosphere of the London marathon will carry him along – his target time on Sunday is 3hrs 20mins 🙂 David is running in support of Health Poverty Action, a British non-governmental organisation founded in 1984 that aims to secure health care access for poor and marginalized communities in developing countries. The organisation aims to bring sustainable solutions to people suffering from poor health due to war, poverty, or marginalization from care for other reasons. Please help me make a difference by making a donation to Davids Virgin Money Giving page where you can sponsor David online. Mass start is 9:45am (UK)/ 13h45 (UAE) so we can keep an eye on Hunty through the afternoon 🙂 The Virgin London Marathon website and interactive map is brilliant – well worth a look 🙂

Hatta Hills

Today we witnessed a monumental turnout from TT2A (26 I believe) for the fantastic Hatta Hills ride.

Under the precision organisation of Mr National it was, as always a brilliant morning riding followed by the legendary breakfast at the Hatta Fort Hotel… pork sausages & bacon.. Mmmm… Hands up if breakfast isn’t the main driver as you’re pushing on up Generator Hill 🙂

The ride was split into 3 packs today – Tunnel One for the Newbies and those short on time, Tunnel Two for the more adventurous and the Monster ride that is Kalba & the Two Tunnels for the hardcore of the team. We have a new King of the Mountain today… Suisse was the first to doth his cap for King Edward who smashed those hills today 🙂

Thanks to our support crew – safety drivers Claire and Sarah. It’s always great piece of mind knowing your there behind us and the ride wouldn’t be the success it is without you. Thanks again 🙂

ETU European Triathlon Championships 2012

Freddie and Didge will be racing on Saturday 21st April 2012 in Eilat, Israel.

Freddie in 16-19 Male AG Sprint is making his debut outing for Belgium and starts alongside 5 British lads and 13 Israeli’s. Didge has moved up an age category since the Worlds in Beijing last year, now competing in the 30-34 Female AG Sprint, she’s up against 5 British girls and 4 Israeli’s.

It looks like they both start at 7am in a mass beach start in calm open water. The water temperature is currently 24oC so it’ll be a non-wet suit swim. Both Freddie and Didge are great swimmers so they should both get a good start to their races. Good luck guys 🙂

Eilat is 1-hour behind Dubai so as the team finishes the sea swim down at JBR they’ll be kicking off 🙂

For more information on the event please go to the official ETU website

TT2A :: Tried and Conquered Yas Marina

We saw a great turnout today at Yas Marina, a fantastic venue for a triathlon here in the UAE. An open water swim in the marina, bike round the F1 track finished with a view of the iconic Yas Marina Hotel saw some awesome performances from the the team all round.

The TT2A Sprint Distance contingent took Open Male 1st Ian Le Pelley. Not too far behind Ian were Ed Hawkins – 2nd, Matt Warnock – 3rd and Neil Flanagan – 4th. It was no surprise to see our very own World Champion Deidre Casey 1st Open Female, and 5th overall – only 6 seconds after Mr Flanagan. Unreal Didge 🙂

In the Olympic Distance we had a huge turn out with some respectable results. Guy Higgs leading the TT2A field with a brilliant 2:23:22 with Trudy Sturkenboom commanding the ladies TT2A field going sub 2h 30 smashing the bike and holding her run all the way 🙂

TT2A Racing :: Tri Yas Abu Dhabi

Friday 13th, unlucky for some. The UAE sees its first twilight triathlon down at the fantastic Yas Marina circuit 🙂 There will be 2 distances, the sprint and the OD. There should be some PB’s out there today, everyone has been training hard these last few months and the conditions cannot get any better. We may even see some changes on the TT2A leaderboards? Both distances should be wicked races – how often do you get to ride your bike round an F1 circuit. Marvelous. So pimp up your bikes guys – the race is on 😀

For information about the event go here The weather has certainly been changable of late, someone defenatily turned up the oven as of last week and we saw some hideous sandstorm yesterday which hung around all day. Looking at the weather forecast that seems to clear and we have a delightful 33 degrees and clear… It’s going to be toasty out there Abu Dhabi weather forecast

Crikey!…. Give that man an Easter Egg

The Chief has done it and cracked out a fantastic 5:36:05 in the Two Oceans ULTRA Marathon… Chris’ run splits: 28km (2:41:31) :: 42km (4:06:35) :: 56km = 5:36:35 Now he’s upped the game on the running front with regards distance events. I know there are one or two that have done these Ultra races, one of them being The Chiefs mate HRH ‘The Captain’ Carl (you can’t make this up). I also know Benny Walton and Ed Hawkins are looking to do this very race next year so we look forward to Chris’s report
